Man With Gun Ditches Weapon

Copyright © 2006 RealPolice.net

The Police Blotter Page offers an inside look at police work from the officer's perspective, not the media's. In our opinion, what you see on the news (i.e. TV, papers, etc.) is not always what it appears. A lot of cases are twisted to cause drama to the viewer giving a misinformed account of what actually occurred to sell the story.

Although we cannot give out specifics as to names, locations, etc. we do our best to provide you with as much information as possible. All faces are blocked out, as well as license plate numbers.

Man Ditches Weapon

A call we received to a known drug area was to back up other police officers wanting to make a a traffic stop. The officers broadcasting the call were in plain clothes and driving a unmarked police car. All we knew was that they wanted a marked police car to stop the vehicle.

When you hear these calls go out, they usually don't tell you the reason for the stop except for the violation they observed as the reason for the stop (i.e. running a red light).

In this particular incident, it turns out the man either had a gun or narcotics and dumped them just before we arrived. The undercover officers didn't see anything thrown out, but lost them for a second while tailing them.  When people throw out narcotics, they're sometimes extremely difficult to find if you don't have a specific spot to find them in.  Most of the time however, police officers are keyed in on watching for contraband to be thrown out, as we're already expecting it.  But this time, the suspected dealer/weapon violator got the upper hand by losing the police for that moment.

police officerAnyway, it turned out that this guy had no warrants and had a valid drivers license, so there was no reason to arrest him. A search of the area of his known path turned up nothing. It did turn out however that he was previously shot at by drug dealers, and police had knowledge of this as well. An attempt to explain to this man that he was "on the wrong path" seemed to be a waste of time as he laughed at us. The attempt murder on his life in the past nearly missed him, but it didn't seem to faze him.

If the weapon would have been recovered in the path he was in (which he's known to carry weapons), he could have been charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon which is currently a 5 year felony. If the police officers would have found the narcotics, depending on the what it was, he could have faced life in prison.
